The Porthole $5 was the last large size $5 Silver Certificate type issued before the nation converted to small size notes in 1928. Lincoln's portrait, which would become the standard portrait used on subsequent $5 notes of all types, was based on a photograph taken by Matthew Brady on February 9, 1864. This example is printed on good paper with original surfaces and retains its vibrant original colors with nice margins and pleasing centering.
