Manufacturers W.F. Barnes and N.F. Thompson founded this bank in 1888. The bank was originally located at the southwest corner of East State and First Streets, but moved to an eight-story building designed in a classical revival style at 425 East State in 1926. The bank entered receivership in 1931. The building became Rockford City Hall in 1937 and was demolished in 1972. Great color and bold printed signatures are seen on this attractive note that has an unusual title layout that includes the city and state within the note's tombstone.
