$1 1935-A Silver Cert. Fr. 2300 WWII Emergency Issue CHEAP HAWAII Brown Seal VF
This Series 1935-A $1 Hawaii Emergency Issue Silver Certificate, Fr. 2300, features George Washington’s portrait, brown Treasury seal and serial numbers, and HAWAII overprints on both sides. The green reverse displays both sides of the Great Seal of the United States beneath prominent HAWAII lettering. Offered in Very Fine condition, this example has a few areas of discoloration and a single pinhole visible only when backlit. These imperfections are reflected in its very low price, offering a budget-friendly opportunity to own this historic WWII issue.
Introduced in 1942 following the attack on Pearl Harbor, these specially marked notes replaced ordinary currency in Hawaii as protection against a possible Japanese invasion. If enemy forces captured supplies of cash, the government could identify and invalidate the Hawaii-marked notes. That practical defensive purpose gives this familiar dollar design lasting historical significance—a worthwhile addition to a WWII collection or Hawaii denomination set at an especially affordable price.
